Dr. Ashima Gupta is an ophthalmologist, specializing in pediatrics and adult strabismus. A native of Louisville, she completed her undergraduate studies from the University of Louisville and her medical degree and residency in ophthalmology at George Washington University School of Medicine. From there, she completed her fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Northwestern in Chicago. After working at a large academic practice in Brooklyn, NY for 7 years, she returned to Louisville 4 years ago to join the family practice with her father and brother, Drs. Sushil and Rishi Kumar. She is married to a very supportive native New Yorker, Paresh, and they have twin 6 year old daughters, Anya and Anisa.
Dr. Gupta is dancing in support of the Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS). VIPS offers a top-rated preschool in Louisville instilling confidence and providing the building blocks for these young children to live their lives to the fullest. The school, itself, has become a model for the entire country in how to design the perfect school for visually impaired preschoolers, especially with its Kids Town, Mobility City and excellence in teaching. However, the preschool is only one aspect of VIPS. They also provide in-home services to children across Kentucky and Indiana. The outreach to visually impaired children has significantly increased in the past few years and is on track to reach and help many more in the years to come. Their number one goal is to try to help as many visually impaired preschool children so that they are on the right path to success by kindergarten. VIPS.org writes that “90% of what a child learns is through their vision and 85% of the foundation of learning happens the first 5 years of their life”. As a pediatric ophthalmologist and Board member, this organization holds a special place in her heart.
